Arliss Ray Mallory's Obituary
Arliss Ray Mallory, 81, of Longview, Texas passed away May 7, 2014 after a sudden illness.
Arliss was born in Lindale, Texas on May 27, 1932 to Raleigh Cater and Lorena Faye Taylor Mallory. He graduated from Lindale High School and went on to study at Sam Houston State University where he earned his Bachelors and Masters Degrees.
Arliss married Margaret "Peggy" Bray on June 11, 1955 and they had three daughters, Mary, Martha, and Melanie. Arliss served in the United States Army and was stationed in San Antonio and Virginia.
Arliss worked for Traveler's Insurance in Dallas for many years and later moved the family to Longview where was an owner in Baxter Sales and ARMS Building and Maintenance until his retirement. During his retirement he devoted his time and energy to many organizations in the city. He especially loved Asbury House and Newgate Mission. His dedication to his faith kept him busy at FUMC Longview where he taught numerous Sunday School classes, served as a regular usher, attended Bible Club and was a long time member of the Henry Foster Sunday School class.
Arliss had many passions but his primary focus was always his faith, his family, and his friends. He was an active member of the Longview Rotary Club, and a Paul Harris Fellow. He loved his Rock Creek Hunting crew, the Lobo Band where he served twice as President of the Band Boosters. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Lindale Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Waco Scottish Rite chapter the Sharon Shrine Temple of Tyler. Arliss was the unofficial Mayor of Brookwood, surrogate Daddy to hundreds of lucky young men and women, and Big Daddy to his grandchildren and great granddaughter. He was a regular attendee at a number of informal, yet very important coffee groups. Arliss served as President of the Alumni Board at Sam Houston State University for two terms.
Arliss was preceded in death by both parents and his sister Mary Frances Mallory Leonard. He leaves to carry his legacy his wife Peggy, his daughter Mary, partner Lisa and their daughter Grace, of Dallas, daughter Martha and her daughters Mallory and Maggie and great granddaughter Macey of Austin, and daughter Melanie and her son Wesley of Longview.
Funeral services will be 9:30 am Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Roy James officiating under direction of Rader Funeral Home. Burial will be at 2:30 pm at the Sabine Cemetery in Lindale, Texas.
The family requests memorials in his honor to Asbury House, Newgate Mission or First United Methodist Church Longview.
He was loved greatly, he will be missed forever.
