Alvin Conley Gober Jr.'s Obituary
Alvin Conley Gober Jr., 84, of Longview TX died Wednesday June 03, 2009 at a local hospital after a long, full life.
At the age of 16 Mr. Gober volunteered to fight for the United States during World War II and enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving 4 years. He received an honorable discharge after receiving the bronze star for action of Okinawa. Shortly thereafter he joined the U.S. Coast Guard. Mr. Gober served in the Korean War during his 18 Years of service with the U.S. Coast Guard. In 1965 he retired as a Senior Chief Petty Officer from the Coast Guard and moved to Longview where he worked as an electrician and gunsmith which was his hobby.
On March 8, 1925 Mr. Gober was born in Frederick, Oklahoma. In November of 1949 he married Mae Eve who he had met on a blind date in Cincinnati, Ohio and later married in Austin, Indiana. He was and active member of the Pine Tree Masonic Lodge where he served as a past Worshipful Master and also honored with the Golden Trowel Award.
Mr. Gober is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mae; Daughter, Barbara Gober of Longview, TX and fiancé Lee Stratton of Boswell, OK; Son Harold Gober and his wife Karen of Longview TX; Granddaughters Vonda and her husband Scott Gunn of Longview TX; April Pinson of Hobbs, NM and Grandson Ranger Wheeler of Rowlett, TX; Great Grandsons Alec, Collin, Nicholas and Shawn Gunn of Longview, TX and Mitchell Pinson of Hobbs, NM; brothers Dee Gober and his wife JoAnn of Hobbs, NM, Tommy Gober and his wife Jeanie of Tyler, TX; and Sisters Annie and her husband Rob Roten of Tyler, TX. and Betty Duncan of Terry, MS. Several nieces and nephews and other family members and friends are left to cherish his memory. He was preceded in death by his parents Alvin Conley, Sr. and Virgie Mae and Sister Billye Jo and brother-in-law Bennie Sellers of Marshall, TX.
The family will receive visitors Friday, June 5th from 6-8pm at Rader Funeral Home in Longview. Services will be held Saturday, June 6th at 12pm at the Chapel of Rader Funeral Home in Longview. Burial will follow after the services at Lakeview Cemetery in Longview with Military and Masonic Honors.
