Albert C. Ruggles, PhD's Obituary
Albert C. Ruggles, PhD, 75 of Longview passed away January 7, 2013 at Good Shepherd Medical Center, Longview.
Al was born November 21, 1937, the only child of Albert C. Ruggles and Dorothy C. Ruggles in Kingsport, Tennessee. He graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School in 1956, playing in the 1955 Tennessee state football champions. Al graduated with a degree in chemistry in 1960 from Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina. There he became a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He received a master's degree in chemistry in 1963 from the University of Tennessee and received his doctorate in chemistry from Clemson University in 1965. He performed his post doctorate duties at the Ohio State University.
In 1967Al joined the Texas Eastman Company as a research chemist. He retired in April 1992 and became a professional hunter in South Africa until 2002.
Al was an Eagle Scout, a certified scuba diver, and a competitive trap, skeet and sporting clays shooter. He enjoyed fishing, backpacking, camping, Dutch oven cooking, hunting, sports car racing and Corvettes.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Mary Claire; his son Albert and his wife Shea of Waco, Texas; his son Ashley and his wife Dawn of Oakdale, California; grandchildren Gareth, Stuart, Travis, Austin, Taylor and Shelby; and his
beloved Joe Bob.
The family will receive friends at Rader Funeral Home in Longview this evening from 5pm-7pm then a memorial service will be Friday, January 11, 2013 at 2pm at the funeral home. Officiating will be Dr. John Adkins.
