Remembering Akinâ?¦.
Akin Vanderslice was a dear friend. He and I used to kid each other at Wood Hollow golf course in Longview about our age. His standard
remark was that he was â??older than dirt.â?
His friends will miss his patented laugh and smile, because most days he was the most cheerful person around. The old Dutchman was a positive thinker and he never let much of anything get him down.
He could dish out pranks on his buddies as well as anybody, and he could take a joke just as well. What I remember most about him in the 15
years I played golf with him around East Texas was he was always unselfish. His first thoughts were about others and when he asked about you or your family, he was sincere. He was always fun to be around.
Akin and I had a special bond because he had been a corrections officer and I was a fellow who grew up in Huntsville, Tx, where my Dad was the warden when I was a child. Akin and I shared some â??prison storiesâ? and we had a connection unlike most. He was a great story teller.
Soft-hearted with the ladies, children and friends, he was â??tough as nailsâ? on the golf course. He was a competitor who never got over being a little boy and the twinkle in his eye let you know he was ready for any game you wanted to play.
Akin was as good as they comeâ?¦.a manâ??s man who never met a stranger. I will miss him dearly.
