I sit here broken-hearted, never thinking I would be writing this today.
I first met Tom a couple of years before meeting Ann at a Texas Carnival Glass convention. As soon as I walked into their room, I could tell that Ann was a people person. We soon discovered that we had a lot in common. We were both educators and we were both only children, so soon she became the sister I didn't have, and I became the brother she didn't have. It didn't take us long to become best friends.
Over the years, I would make many trips to Longview to visit Tom and Ann. I have wonderful memories of Ann and I sitting at the dinette in the kitchen, sipping on a Jim Beam or Bumpass Bomb, talking about things going on in our personal lives or about thing going on in the carnival glass world. Sometimes we would laugh and sometimes we would cry as we talked about various things.
While Ann came to appreciate the carnival glass that brought us together, she really loved her carnival glass frogs! They had a prominent place in the living room, and she was so happy when another one would be added to the collection.
During the last few years, health issues have kept me from traveling, so Ann and I would talk frequently on the phone. She became my "nurse" during a couple of very serious health problems that I faced, and despite having her own conditions to deal with, she managed to keep the house running and made sure to check on me daily to see how I was doing.
Ann was one of the kindest persons I ever met. She was the epitome of true Southern hospitality.
Tom, I am thinking of you with love, wishing I were closer to you so that I could help during this difficult time. Christi, Tommy, and Libby, know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I pray that God will help each of you get through these next few weeks.
I am not going to say goodbye my sweet friend. I know that by God's grace, I will see you again someday. Until that day, I'll just say that I love you.
