August 2, 1922 - January 24, 2015
Heaven welcomed home a faithful servant January 24, 2015, with the passing of Venita Thornton Mitchell, 92. Venita was born August 2, 1922, in Winters, TX, to D. B. & Mary Thornton. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Lt. Col. Jesse W. Mitchell, her parents, 4 sisters and grandson, Rick W. Finke. She graduated from Winters High School and attended business college. Jesse and Venita married June 15, 1943. A career in the United States Air Force provided an interesting life as they enjoyed each location and made life-long friends all around the country. J. W. and Venita moved to Longview in 1972 to be close to her sister and brother-in-law, Zella and Jasper Allbright. All that knew Venita loved her. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, loyal friend to many, a superb cook, excellent seamstress, and community, church, and school volunteer. She loved music, travel, and fashion, and had a special place in her heart for young children. Venita loved the Lord and her strong Christian faith guided her throughout her life. She was a member of Oakland Heights Baptist Church for 43 years. Our “Mimi” is survived by her daughters, Janet and her husband Dr. Rick L. Finke of Nashville, TN, and Debi and her husband Bob Farrell, of Longview. Grandchildren include Doug Finke of Nashville, Julie Syvrud and her husband Zach of Rockwall, and Steven Farrell and his wife Nancy of Tyler. She also was blessed with great-grandchildren, Jameson, Luke, and Truett Syvrud, and Libby Farrell, as well as several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the caring staff at Buckner Westminster and HeartsWay Hospice for their special attention, concern, and care for “Mrs. Mitchell.” Friends are welcome to join the family for a time of visitation at Rader Funeral Home in Longview, Monday, January 26th, from 5-7p.m. Graveside services will be at Rosewood Park, in Longview, Tuesday, January 27th at 10 a.m. with Dr. Rick Webb officiating.
