Eleanor N. Reese, 93, was smitten when a handsome Marine from Longview, Texas, hopped onto a streetcar in Washington DC during World War II and sat down beside her. She told her daughters that "Charlie" chose that seat because her liked her smile—but mostly because she was carrying a bag of candy. Mrs. Reese, formerly of Longview, died in Winston-Salem, N.C., after a long illness. She was the widow of Charles Lawrence Reese Jr., who was born in Longview and retired here after a 21-year career in the Marine Corps. The Reeses were married for 55 years before Mr. Reese's death in 2001. Mrs. Reese, who worked at a Longview insurance company in the 1970s, had been active in First Methodist Church on Fredonia Street until her illness and move to North Carolina. She loved music, reading, and helping out at the Dykers farm in Chatham County, North Carolina. She grew up the daughter of dairy farmers in Stoneboro, Pa., attended college in Mercer, Pa., and then went to work in Washington DC during World War II. She is survived by three daughters, Carol Reese Dykers of Winston-Salem, N.C., Barbara Reese Linnen of Fort Worth, Texas, and Cheryl Reese Gill of Las Cruces, New Mexico; two grandsons, Michael Linnen and Christopher Linnen, both of Austin, Texas, and a great-granddaughter, Maggie Linnen, also of Austin. Graveside services will be held at 2 PM Saturday, September 22, 2012 at Gum Springs Cemetery in Longview with Reverend Mike Schutz officiating. Arrangements are with Rader Funeral Home of Longview. The family request that memorial donations be made to the hospice of your choice. A memorial guestbook may be signed online at www.raderfh.com.
