    Betty Jean Scott

    June 18, 1934 - January 16, 2017

Betty Jean Scott, age 82, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 16, 2017, in Longview TX. She was born on June 18, 1934, in Black Mountain, NC (near Asheville). Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Edward (Ned) Scott, her father Thomas Marett and mother Jessie Vea (Shelton) Marett. At her side at her passing were her 2 sons and their wives: Richard and Diane Scott of Irving TX and Jim and Mindy Scott of Longview, and granddaughter, Rachel. Betty was Grandma to 4 wonderful grandkids: Suzanne, Rachel, Charlie and Anna. Betty met and married Ned in Michigan. They moved several times following his job, finally landing in Longview in 1960. She was a member of First Christian Church of Longview for over 50 years, and she was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Her hobbies included reading, sewing, helping Ned with his roses, and music. She never mastered cooking, but Ned enjoyed restaurants, thank goodness. Living in Longview for the past 57 years, she was blessed to have many friends. Family and friends were her love and joy. Betty had 5 siblings, and Ned had 6, so her family was a large one, just not logistically close by. She created a special bond with her neighbors. They became her surrogate family. Special acknowledgements are extended to her close friends from the neighborhood. Since she did not drive, they helped her in many ways throughout the years. They all spent many special times together, celebrating each of their joys and triumphs along with supporting each other through life’s struggles and heartaches. Also, a special thanks to the staff at Hawkins Creek Assisted Living and Encompass Home Health. They loved Betty and she loved them like family. Visitation will be Friday, January 20, from 6:30 – 8:00PM at Radar Funeral Home in Longview. A Rosary will be recited at 6:15PM for anyone interested in participating in the prayer in the chapel at Radar. Graveside services will be Saturday, January 21, at Rosewood Park in the Mausoleum Chapel in north Longview at 11:00AM.
