I remember growing up with Mel Jr after he and his family moved to Longview. Occasionally, Mel Jr and I would start wrestling in the house and maybe break some stuff that made MaMa Jo unhappy. She was always kind and loving to all of us; but, she liked her home a certain way and we had just messed that up. Sheer terror would describe what I remember feeling when that happened. Just when I thought my end was near, I would look over at Mel Sr sitting in his chair reading his paper. He never said a thing but he would tilt his head toward Mel and me with a slight grin on his face.
I knew then we would be ok.
Mel Sr had just the right touch and tone for teaching teenage boys the proper path for becoming young men. Not too hard. Not too soft. He was one of a kind and will be missed by all of us lucky enough to be touched by his presence.
