Carl Edward Amick

Carl Edward Amick passed away peaceful on Saturday, 3/1/2014 with his family at his side. Carl was born November 14, 1924 in Shreveport, Louisiana as the only child to Carl Sterling and Talley Elizabeth Amick. He was a graduate of Vivian, Louisiana High School and attended Louisiana Tech and Centenary College majoring in chemistry. While in college, Carl continued his pursuit of music, playing in the “swing band” specializing in the trumpet. He also played the violin as he had since early childhood and as an adult he found great pleasure in evenings of practice with the Longview Symphony Orchestra. From 1941 through the close of WWII September of 1945, Carl served in the 1st Marine Division as a medical corpsman with an additional 5 months being spent in mainland China disarming and repatriating the Japanese from China. Following his military service, Carl returned to Louisiana Tech where he met his future wife of almost 60 years, Barbara Jo Norris Amick. They were married June 20th, 1946 in Bastrop, Louisiana. Carl and Barbara moved to Longview, Texas, in 1952, with their first 2 children, Elizabeth and Carl Sterling, II. Carl was initially employed as a chemist at Knox Lee Power Plant and some years later he began work in the research lab at Eastman Kodak/Longview. In 1960 Carl decided to use skills he acquired while in the Marines working in dental laboratories-the old school method of lost wax casting of metals. Carl began a substantially successful jewelry manufacturing business. From 1960 to his retirement, Carl produced one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry from discerning customers all over Texas and Louisiana. Even as his reputation as a gifted jeweler continued, Carl began a partial retirement and sold his business to his youngest son, Marcus Amick in 1986. With retirement, Carl and his wife, Barbara chased their dream of raising and showing Tennessee Walking Horses. Determined to know all there was to know about his horses, Carl even learned to shoe his own animals. Along with caring for their horses, the pair became avid fisherman and RV enthusiasts. Together they searched every lake between Texas, Missouri, and Louisiana for the biggest catfish, Bass, and white perch. In 1967 Carl and Barbara had become members of the Centre Presbyterian Church. After the loss of his wife in 2006, Carl continued as a loyal committed and faithful participant of his church. Never one to stop endeavoring to improve himself, Carl in recent years took up competitive bridge. Weekly bridge competitions and Friday night dances in Hallsville with his dearest friend, Elaine Nesbitt, made Carl abundantly happy. With his commanding presence, uncommon integrity, and kindness of spirit, Carl E. Amick will be remembered by his family and friends as an endearing man who led a full life. Survivors include a dear friend, Elaine Nesbitt; children: Elizabeth L. Hinkle of Longview, Carl Sterling and Felisa Amick of Corpus Christi, and Marcus Alan and Kip Amick of Tatum; grandchildren, Theresa Amick of Houston, Beth and Paul Matlock of Longview, May Cobb and Chuck Scherrer of Austin, Susie Cobb and David Hess of Austin, Cristian and Melissa Romero of San Antonio, Courtney and Wesley Hartley of Marquez, and MacAlan Amick of Tatum, Additionally Carl had 4 great-grandchildren; Xavier and Logan Matlock, Johnny Scherrer, and Cristian Romero, Jr. A visitation opportunity will be held in the chapel of Rader Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 5th, 2014 from 6 to 8pm. In honor of Carl’s life, a remembrance service is to be held at 10am, Thursday, March 6th, 2014 at the Centre Presbyterian Church in Elderville, Texas with the Rev. John Woodard officiating under the direction of Rader Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Elderville Cemetery. Pallbearers are to be Paul Matlock, Chuck Scherrer, Jay Nesbitt, Kim Smith, Wesley Hartley, Rodney Henderson, Trevor Strong, Tyson Strong, Phil Peacock, Joe Wilhelm, and Jim Bishop.
