I was sorry to hear of the passing of "Coach Nihart" in the Tucumcari newspaper. I remember growing up with Beth and Pat when my folks lived in Logan and owned Shollenbarger Lbr. and Hwde. before they sold the stores in Logan and Tucumcari, and moved to Colorado Springs. I believe Beth and Pat and my brother, Joe, played a few ping pong games in the back of the store building. I even "boxed" if you can call it that a few minutes with Coach Nihart when I was about 14 or 15. My condolences and best wishes and prayers for the Nihart family at this time. Kenneth E. My condolences to the family. I knew Mr. Nihart as a student at Logan high school, as a teacher and mostly as the coach there. I discovered he had been a boxer during p.e. when he asked us if any of us thought we could handle boxing gloves. Wasn't long before he had me convinced!That was the start of a friendship that I will always cherish. I looked up to him. Rest in peace John.

John Nihart will always be Coach Nihart to me. I shall never forget how he came to Logan High School and brought a different coaching style that through conditioning and discipline led to successes on the basketball court that Logan had not had for a number of years. Not only was he a great coach but a fine man who was a wonderful role model. To the Nihart family:

I was so sad to hear of John's passing. Although he goes to a much better place I know you still grieve, as we all do.

I had the distinct priviledge to teach Ann & John's Sunday School class on occasion over the past several years at Greggton UMC. The first time I did so I will tell you I was very concerned about teaching a Methodist Sunday School class with a Methodist Minister in attendance! But John made me feel right at home and often told me how much he appreciated my perspective. I will be forever grateful to him for those words of encouragement.
